While Sunbathers Fled Danger, Popular Picture Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, detected loud noises ringing out around the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw made it clear something was wrong.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had rushed up the hill soaked, she heard someone approaching from behind. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to get away from, and hauling that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running at something that certainly every part of you would signal you to run in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely full throttle running.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many moments of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews attending to dozens of victims.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the location of the attack serving as a makeshift hospital. It was shared that colleagues were also seen taking action, for instance going into the surf to rescue people needing help.

In the days after the events, messages of appreciation were shared. One post expressed gratitude for the individuals who showed that “compassion will always conquer evil”.

The group of lifeguards later shared a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care directed at our responders,” the group stated. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it helps those impacted.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many full-time beach safety officers, said that the team acted heroically from the moment the incident started through to late that night.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” said a mayor.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in ensuring our internationally renowned beaches secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the face of such hatred.”
