Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site from which the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
