The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
