The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
