The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Has the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
