Taliban Employed Left-Behind British Gear to Track Down Local Nationals Who Worked Alongside Western Forces, Inquiry Learns

A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities left behind confidential equipment permitting the Taliban to locate local individuals who collaborated with international military.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk

The source, identified as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the data leak were told to relocate and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

MPs are investigating official handling of a serious breach of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to come to Britain to flee militant rule.

How the Leak Was Discovered

A spreadsheet including their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and occasionally relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker employed at special operations center in early 2022.

The leak became known months later, when the names of several individuals who had requested to settle in Britain were posted on social media.

Impact of the Data Breach

Preliminary research submitted to the investigation indicated that approximately fifty relatives and associates of people concerned by the breach had been killed.

A legal restriction regarding the breach was put in force in late 2023 and blocked relevant facts about it from media reporting until July 2025.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, the source and the aid group she collaborated with advised Afghan families they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and altered their phone numbers. Those were the crucial data that, if the Taliban acquired these details, would cause their location being found,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

Person A argued that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been mistaken to state that the acquisition of the records by the regime was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they live secretly. Everything boils down to past work history.”

She detailed disturbing treatment suffered by affected individuals, including electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had their arms broken to force households to reveal locations,” she testified.
