Conservative responses to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of files that included no previously unseen data.
