There are "no plans" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has stated.

This past week the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar claiming the president had pressured him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on Monday Trump endorsed a peace initiative supported by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the current front line.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, suggesting that halting hostilities would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that encompass the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a non-starter for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the sole subject that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's unscheduled call with Trump recently occurred before speculation that the United States was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he remarked.
