New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities shared video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
