Forecasters are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," said the national forecaster.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be chilly, meaning additional clothing essential, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

Readings Set to Fall Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Advisories Activated

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather could to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is completely essential.
