Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
