Manchester City's manager Expresses Regret Over Broadcast Crew Incident Following Loss to Magpies
Pep Guardiola has admitted feeling "shame" after an exchange with a camera operator in the wake of Manchester City's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.
When the match concluded, an emotional Guardiola stepped onto the field and had heated discussions with match official Sam Barrott and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães, and also touched the broadcast crew's equipment.
"I said sorry," the manager remarked. "I feel embarrassed, ashamed, looking back. I don’t like it. I immediately apologized to the cameraman. That's just me. After 1,000 games I’m not a perfect person, errors happen."
"One thing is certain, I defend any team and my club, that’s for sure. The reason why I want to defend my team is no doubt – based on my career to clinch the title we have to do 100 points, high nineties, or we fall short."
Team Standing and Guardiola's Assessment
The team sits in third and are seven behind the Gunners following their fourth loss this campaign. "Losing four games out of 12 we have to improve a lot," he conceded. "Mathematically, it’s possible to win everything."
When questioned if this meant the quadruple could be achieved, he responded: "As a seasoned reporter, have you ever heard me discuss four trophies last winter during our historic run? Never."
Exchange with Bruno
On the subject of his talk with the Newcastle player, the coach explained: "We have known Bruno for many years and post-match, home or away, we converse. Our paths always cross and I always have a good relationship. I enjoy it. I'm passionate, I like discussing and move my hands."
He wouldn't mind should a rival coach addressed his squad immediately after a game. "No - as long as it's respectful as I do, it's fine," he noted, before referencing Barrott. "The referee was involved throughout the match, constantly. My God, very much so."
Controversial Decisions
City were unhappy that Barrott or the VAR denied a spot-kick on a Schär tackle against Foden, while they also questioned Bruno's positioning when Harvey Barnes scored the decisive strike. Subsequent images indicate the Brazilian was onside.
Upcoming Milestone
Guardiola will take charge of his 100th Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday. "It’s quite good, it means that every season annually," he said.
The club has ten points after four games in the group, and Leverkusen hold five.
