Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.
The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, according to a statement.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.
Community members disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.
A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has worsened considerably in the last several months, with schools bearing the brunt of the unrest.
