The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but not the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
